This Privacy Policy explains how the Debias mobile application (“Debias”, “the app”, “we”, “us”, or “our”) handles information when you use it. We are committed to protecting your privacy. Debias is an educational app for learning about cognitive biases and does not require you to create an account or provide any personal information to use it.

By using Debias, you agree to the practices described in this policy.

1. Summary (the short version)

  • We do not collect or store your personal information on any server. Debias has no backend, no user accounts, and no login.
  • Your activity stays on your device. Quiz progress, diagnostic results and history, and your settings are saved only in local storage on your phone.
  • Third-party services may collect data. We show ads through Google AdMob and offer an optional purchase through Google Play Billing. These Google services collect data according to their own privacy policies.
  • You can remove ads. A one-time “Remove Ads” in-app purchase disables advertising.

2. Information We Handle

a) Information stored only on your device

Debias saves the following locally on your device so the app can function. This information is not transmitted to us and is not accessible to us:

  • Quiz answers, scores, and mastery/progress tracking
  • Bias self-assessment (“diagnostic”) answers, results, and history
  • App preferences and settings (such as theme or language)
  • Whether you have purchased “Remove Ads”

This data remains on your device and is deleted when you uninstall the app or clear the app’s data.

b) Information collected automatically by third-party services

We use third-party services that may automatically collect certain information when you use the app. We do not control this collection. Depending on the service, this may include:

  • Device identifiers (including the Android Advertising ID)
  • Approximate, non-precise location inferred from your IP address
  • Device and connection information (device model, operating system version, network type)
  • Ad interaction data (ads shown, clicks)
  • Crash and diagnostic information generated by the underlying Google libraries

c) Purchases

If you buy the “Remove Ads” in-app purchase, the transaction is processed by Google Play Billing. We do not receive or store your payment card details, billing address, or other payment information. Google provides us only with confirmation of whether a purchase was completed.

3. How We Use Information

Because Debias does not collect personal information on our own servers, we use information only to:

  • Provide and maintain app features (quizzes, diagnostics, search, and the bias library)
  • Remember your progress and preferences on your device
  • Display and, where applicable, personalize advertising through Google AdMob
  • Process and restore your “Remove Ads” purchase through Google Play

4. Third-Party Services

Debias relies on the following third-party services, each governed by its own privacy policy:

  • Google AdMob — serves advertisements. AdMob may use device identifiers and other data to deliver and measure ads, including personalized ads where permitted. These services operate independently, and we encourage you to review their policies.

5. Advertising and Your Choices

Debias displays ads (including interstitial ads) through Google AdMob unless you purchase “Remove Ads.”

  • Personalized ads: Where required by law (for example, in the EEA, UK, and Switzerland), Google’s consent mechanism may ask for your consent before showing personalized ads. You can change your choice as permitted by that mechanism.
  • Reset or limit your Advertising ID: You can reset or delete your Android Advertising ID, or opt out of ad personalization, in your device settings under Settings → Google → Ads.
  • Remove ads entirely: Purchase the one-time “Remove Ads” option in the app.

6. App Permissions

Debias requests the following Android permissions:

  • Internet (network access) — required to load ads and content images, and to process purchases.
  • Notifications (POST_NOTIFICATIONS) — used only to deliver optional reminders/notifications from the app. You can disable notifications at any time in your device settings.
  • Run at startup (RECEIVE_BOOT_COMPLETED) — used to re-schedule reminders after the device restarts.

Debias does not request access to your contacts, camera, microphone, precise GPS location, photos, or files.

7. Children’s Privacy

Debias is not directed to children under the age of 13 (or the minimum age required in your country). We do not knowingly collect personal information from children. The app may serve advertising through Google AdMob, which is not intended for children. If you believe a child has provided personal information through a third-party service in the app, please contact us and we will assist where possible.

8. Data Retention and Deletion

  • Information stored on your device is retained until you delete it, clear the app’s data, or uninstall the app.
  • To delete all locally stored data, uninstall Debias or clear the app’s data via Settings → Apps → Debias → Storage → Clear data.
  • Data handled by third-party services (such as Google AdMob) is retained and deleted according to those providers’ policies.

9. Your Privacy Rights

Depending on where you live, you may have rights under laws such as the EU/UK General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) or the California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA), including the right to access, correct, or delete personal data, and to opt out of the “sale” or “sharing” of personal information for targeted advertising.

Because Debias does not collect or store personal information on our own servers, most such requests relating to advertising data should be directed to the relevant third-party provider (see Section 4). For any request you believe we can help with, contact us using the details below.

10. Data Security

We take reasonable measures to protect information. Data created in the app is stored locally on your device and is protected by your device’s own security (such as your screen lock). However, no method of electronic storage or transmission is completely secure, and we cannot guarantee absolute security.

11. International Users

Debias is available globally. Third-party services we use (such as Google) may process data in countries other than your own, including the United States. By using the app, you acknowledge that your information may be processed in accordance with those providers’ policies.

12. Changes to This Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. When we do, we will revise the “Last updated” date above. Material changes will be reflected in the app’s store listing. Your continued use of Debias after changes take effect constitutes acceptance of the updated policy.
